Float Rods

Float rods are the most common rods on the market as they are a popular tool for coarse fishing and are also often used instead of poles in match fishing. This means that they can also be called match rods, which should not be confused with match poles. Float fishing rods are typically long and thin, meaning you can cast good distances, and all float rods tend to be 10ft or longer. As with all rods, the longer the rod the greater the casting distance you can achieve. To keep the rod lightweight despite the length, they are often constructed out of fibreglass or carbon fibre. These lightweight materials means that rods can be delicate enough to hook and play a small fish without causing it harm, yet also be powerful enough to cope with a larger fish. However, some materials are more sophisticated than others, and because of this, float rods can often be bought quite cheaply – increasing in price as the material used to construct them becomes more sophisticated. The best quality rods will have at least as many eyes (or rings) as it does feet. For example, a 10ft rod should have at least 10 rings to ensure a smooth arc when it comes under tension.
