Spinning Rods

Spinning rods are traditionally used when lure fishing for predators, and as such they tend to be shorter than the average rod you’ll see on the bank, usually between 6 and 10ft. The casting weight is usually printed on the rod, too, as an easy guide for the kind of lures which will produce the best results with the rod. Spinning rods often have larger guides to minimize the fiction between the line and the guide during casting, as a spinning reel with send the rod in lateral, spiralling motion and the wider guide rings accommodate this. However, some spinning rods are designed for use with a multiplier reel (particularly if it’s a rod geared towards shore fishing), and the guides will reflect this.

As the fish you’ll be targeting will usually be larger predatory fish, and a spinning rod accommodates this with its robust structure. This also gives the rod a stiff action, which is ideal for flinging the lure into the water and pulling it across in front of the fish. However, the robust nature of the rod doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice tip sensitivity, and lighter-weight spinning rods are the most popular for catching an assortment of predatory fish, including trout and small pike.
