Telescopic Rods

Telescopic rods are what they say on the tin. They are constructed of multiple tubular sections that slide into one another – like the traditional telescope. These rods are often used as travel rods because of their compact storage, what they make up for in ease of assembly and deconstruction, they lose in rod action. This makes them unsuited for fly fishing, and typically telescopic rods are marketed as an alternative to spinning rods. However, they are also popular among beach anglers, as the 12 or 14ft rod required to get out past the surf can be very cumbersome to carry, even in two or three sections!

As far as sections go, the general thought is that the most sections a rod like this has the better it performs. The more sections, the more guides the rod will have, so the better the curve will be. An increased number of guides also distributes the power through the rod more evenly, meaning less stress is placed upon a specific area of the rod. This has multiple positives, as it allows further casting and decreases the chance of rod breakages. These rods are often constructed from the same materials as traditional fishing rods, and come in a range of fibreglass, graphite, and carbon fibre.
